The “Monte Carlo” was named after Erik Carlson‘s victory at the famous Monte Carlo Rally. This ACTUAL car was used by Jerry Seinfeld in an episode of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” The 2014 episode was filmed in Portland, Oregon and featured the comedian Fred Arminson, from the show “Portlandia.” Originally, Jerry had a Sonett V4 scheduled for the episode, but the owner backed out five days before shooting was to start. He feared his back window would be in jeopardy, and since they are very rare, would not allow the car to be used. Tom was actually on his way to Bonneville Salt Flats with his 1967 Sonett race car when the races were canceled due to wet conditions. The next morning, Tom received a phone call from the Seinfeld field camp looking for a Monte Carlo 850! Tom’s son, Nate, just back from deployment, grabbed the Green Saab in Fort Dodge, Iowa and met Tom in the Black Hills to proceed on to Portland with the Saab. (Seinfeld actually had Jay Leno contact Tom around 2008 about buying a car exactly like this one that was for sale on eBay.) This car was formerly owned by Tom’s longtime friend Bob McNary. Tom bought it from Detroit during the bankruptcy of the city. If you want to hear a real Saab story, let Patti tell you this one!
